In the foreground is the flat
        and indented Kabal Peninsula
        (from capo = cape), protected
            from the north winds by
a 7.5 km deep Stari Grad Bay
               (in the background).
           In this bay, Greek colonists
             from the Aegean island
            of Paros defeated in 384
             B.C. 6000 Illyrians in the
           first known naval battle in
            the Croatian Adriatic and
proceeded to found at its far
              end the city of Pharos.
In 219 B.C. Roman fleet sailed
           into the bay and brought
to an end the dream of
         Demetrius, an ancient citizen
         of Pharos, of his hometown’s
            endless power and glory.
        Kabal Peninsula is a protected
nature park, today as in the
            past covered with dense
           evergreen Mediterranean
            underbrush made up of
           myrtle, savory, strawberry
           tree and rosemary, with a
            pine forest at its summit.
